India Evacuates Thousands as Cyclone Montha Approaches

(MENAFN) Officials reported on Monday that thousands of residents along India’s eastern shoreline have been moved to safer areas and shelters ahead of Cyclone Montha, which is expected to strike on Tuesday.

Meteorologists warned that the storm will bring heavy rainfall and powerful winds. The India Meteorological Department projected that the cyclone could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm as it makes landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast.

In preparation, authorities have relocated thousands to 219 designated cyclone shelters and other relief facilities.

Earlier on Monday, India’s East Coast Railway suspended several passenger trains to prioritize safety.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu stated the government is closely tracking the cyclone’s impact. He said the government has “already initiated measures to relocate people from coastal areas to rehabilitation centers.”

He also confirmed that the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force have been mobilized to respond to potential emergencies.
