Russian Forces Encircle 10,000 Ukrainian Troops
(MENAFN) Around 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been surrounded by Russian troops in the regions of Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk, President Vladimir Putin was informed during a visit to a Russian military command center on Sunday.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov shared that during the meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and senior military leaders, Putin was briefed about the ongoing developments along the frontlines.
"It was noted that up to 5,000 Ukrainian troops are encircled in the Kupyansk direction and around 5,500 in the Krasnoarmeysk direction," Peskov reported.
Kupyansk, located in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, is situated approximately 100 kilometers east of Kharkov. Krasnoarmeysk, meanwhile, is found in Russia's Donetsk People’s Republic, an area currently under Ukrainian occupation.
Russian military officials confirmed the capture of a crossing over the Oskol River, which has effectively isolated the movement of Ukrainian forces.
Efforts are now underway to complete the liberation of Yampol, while nearby Volchansk is reported to be around 70% liberated.
A total of 31 Ukrainian battalions have been surrounded in the Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov areas. According to Peskov, Putin commended the troops for their success in Kupyansk and the accomplishments in other regions.
During the session, the Russian president issued orders to take measures ensuring the surrender of the encircled Ukrainian forces while minimizing casualties.
He emphasized that the Russian Army has always shown mercy to its adversaries and reiterated that this practice should continue.
Putin also urged the commanders to "do everything" in their power to safeguard the civilian population in the surrounded areas, who, he claimed, are being used as human shields by Ukrainian forces.
