Russian army says Burevestnik missile can evade missile defenses

(MENAFN) Russia’s military has announced that its new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik, possesses an unlimited range and can bypass existing air and missile defense systems, according to official reports.

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov made the remarks on Sunday during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to a Russian Army command center. During the meeting, Putin was briefed on developments along the front line with Ukrainian forces and on military exercises involving the country’s strategic nuclear capabilities. Gerasimov said the Burevestnik test was conducted on October 21.

According to the report, the missile flew for several hours, covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers. Gerasimov emphasized that this figure does not represent the missile’s maximum potential range.

“The technical characteristics of the Burevestnik missile make it capable of striking highly protected targets at any distance with guaranteed accuracy,” Gerasimov stated.

“During the test flight, the missile successfully performed all designated vertical and horizontal maneuvers, demonstrating its strong ability to evade anti-missile and air defense systems.”

The Burevestnik is described as a nuclear-powered, unlimited-range strategic cruise missile designed to target and destroy heavily fortified positions, including underground bunkers. It reportedly cannot be detected by standard radar systems and can only be tracked by specialized satellites during its launch and early flight phases.

President Putin first introduced the missile project in 2018, portraying it as a revolutionary weapon capable of defying traditional missile interception systems due to its non-ballistic flight path. He noted that the missile’s unlimited range allows it to fly and maneuver indefinitely. Speaking to Gerasimov, Putin reaffirmed that the Burevestnik is a “unique product that no one else in the world has,” while acknowledging that “much work” remains before it becomes fully operational.
