Kremlin Responds to Trump’s Remarks on Nuclear Missile Test
(MENAFN) On Monday, the Kremlin reiterated Russia's commitment to safeguarding its national security, following the testing of a nuclear-powered missile the previous day.
This comes after US President Donald Trump urged Moscow to focus on ending the ongoing war in Ukraine instead.
During a meeting with high-ranking military officials on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia had successfully completed “decisive tests” for its Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile.
Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported that the missile flew for approximately 15 hours, covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers (about 8,700 miles).
Putin described the Burevestnik as “unique” and highlighted its “unlimited range,” emphasizing the missile's advanced capabilities.
The development of the Burevestnik, which was first made public in 2018, is seen as a significant milestone for Russia’s defense technology.
In response to the missile tests, President Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan on Monday, downplayed their importance.
He pointed out that the US already has a nuclear submarine stationed "right off their shores," which eliminates the need for such long-range missile tests.
Trump also expressed his belief that Putin should focus on ending the war in Ukraine, a conflict he said “should have taken one week” but is now entering its fourth year.
“He ought to get the war ended... instead of testing missiles,” Trump added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed Trump’s remarks in a press briefing, noting that while it is “important” to acknowledge the US president’s viewpoint, the comments reflect Trump’s perspective on the situation.
