Afghanistan Risks Losing 10% Of GDP As Aid Declines, Warns IRC

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The International Rescue Committee (IRC) warned Afghanistan could lose up to 10% of its GDP as international aid and climate funding sharply decline this year.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned that Afghanistan could lose up to 10% of its gross domestic product due to declining foreign aid.

In a report released on Wednesday, the IRC said global climate assistance to Afghanistan had dropped by nearly 40%, threatening ongoing humanitarian and recovery programs.

The organization noted that most international funds are being directed toward countries with stable climates, leaving Afghanistan - one of the world's most vulnerable, critically underfunded.

To mitigate the worsening impacts of drought and economic strain, the IRC said it has provided cash assistance to more than 28,000 families across the country.

The agency emphasized that Afghanistan continues to face severe drought and mounting climate challenges that require immediate, sustained international support.

Ahead of the upcoming Berlin Climate Security Conference, the IRC urged global actors to prioritize at-risk nations like Afghanistan in their climate adaptation funding.

Afghanistan remains among the world's top 10 countries most affected by climate change, where extreme weather, economic collapse, and limited humanitarian access have deepened the ongoing crisis.

Experts warn that without renewed funding, Afghanistan's fragile health, food, and livelihood systems could further deteriorate, exacerbating the country's already dire humanitarian emergency.
