WHO Warns of Health "Catastrophe" in Gaza

(MENAFN) Gaza is facing a severe health "catastrophe" that is likely to endure for "generations to come," according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Speaking on a program, Dr. Tedros emphasized that a substantial increase in humanitarian aid is crucial to address the complex healthcare needs of Gaza's population.

Despite Israel permitting more medical supplies and other forms of aid to enter Gaza since the ceasefire with Hamas came into effect on 10 October, Dr. Tedros pointed out that the volume of aid provided is still insufficient to restore the territory’s healthcare system.

His comments come as the United States works to reinforce the ceasefire it helped broker, following renewed violence over the weekend.

The ceasefire agreement has been described by the White House as the initial phase of a comprehensive 20-point peace plan, which includes a boost in aid to Gaza and the assurance that supplies will be distributed "without interference" from either party.

While Dr. Tedros welcomed the ceasefire, he noted that the subsequent increase in aid has been smaller than anticipated.

When asked about the on-the-ground conditions, Dr. Tedros explained that Gaza's population has been suffering from widespread famine, "overwhelming" injuries, a collapsed healthcare system, and disease outbreaks due to the destruction of water and sanitation facilities.

He further stated that the combination of these factors, along with limited access to humanitarian assistance, makes the situation catastrophic and "beyond words."
