Power Outage Paralyses Yemen's Aden As Fuel Supplies Run Out

(MENAFN- Nam News Network) ADEN, Yemen, Oct 21 (NNN-SABA) – The General Electricity Corporation in Aden, announced yesterday, a power outage, across the southern Yemeni port city, after the last fuel supplies, needed to run the main power station were exhausted.

The state-owned corporation responsible for the city's electricity infrastructure, stated that, Aden's power generation had“reached zero megawatts at 1:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT),” noting that, the city had already been without electricity for 24 consecutive hours.

The company said, all diesel- and fuel-powered stations in the city, had gone out of service. It urged relevant authorities and political parties, to“shoulder their national and humanitarian responsibilities and act urgently to secure fuel supplies to end the crisis.”

Before the total blackout, the company reported that, the city's electricity production was around 53 megawatts, far short of the estimated demand that could exceed 620 megawatts.

The ongoing power crisis has worsened living conditions, and disrupted basic services in Aden, where chronic shortages have become a daily challenge.

Since 2015, Aden has served as the temporary capital of the internationally recognised Yemeni government, after the administration relocated from Yemeni capital, Sanaa, following the Houthi takeover.

The Houthis have since retained control of Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, as the conflict between the two sides continues to fuel, what the United Nations has called, one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.– NNN-SABA
