Trump, Zelensky Hold Talks at White House
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky have initiated discussions at the White House.
This meeting follows Trump’s recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, during which the two leaders agreed to arrange a summit in Budapest, Hungary.
Zelensky arrived in Washington on Friday, leading a substantial delegation. After greeting the Ukrainian president, Trump informed reporters that his call with Putin would be a central topic of their discussions.
He stated, “We had a big call yesterday, as you know, with President Putin, and we’ll be talking about it.”
Trump further mentioned that their conversation would cover the possibility of supplying Ukraine with new armaments, while recognizing that this could intensify the conflict. “We’re going to be talking about that… It’s an escalation, but we’ll be talking about that,” he added.
Earlier, Zelensky requested that Trump provide Kiev with Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have the capability to strike targets up to 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) away, potentially reaching Moscow and beyond.
Russia had previously cautioned that delivering Tomahawks would “not change the situation on the battlefield,” but would “severely undermine the prospects of a peaceful settlement” and damage US-Russia relations.
