Madagascar's Military Takes Charge As Randrianirina Sworn In

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar's president after the military seized power, following youth-led protests that ousted Andry Rajoelina.

Randrianirina said a military committee and transitional government will lead for up to two years before elections. The army assumed control after parliament removed Rajoelina in absentia for "dereliction of duty".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a swift return to constitutional rule in Madagascar, urging inclusive efforts to tackle unrest.

Colonel Michael Randrianirina, now in power, denies staging a coup, claiming the military acted on public demand.

Protests over water and electricity shortages since September 25 have left at least 22 dead and over 100 injured, according to the UN Human Rights Office.
