Italy Suspends Extradition of Ukrainian Citizen
(MENAFN) Italy’s highest judicial body has temporarily blocked the transfer of a Ukrainian citizen to German custody over alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions.
The Court of Cassation ruled in favor of Sergey Kuznetsov, a decision attributed to an “incorrect legal classification” in the European arrest request, as explained by his attorney, Nicola Canestrini, on Wednesday.
The proceedings are set to be re-evaluated in the future.
Kuznetsov, who previously served in the Ukrainian military, was apprehended by authorities while vacationing near Rimini in August.
He firmly denies any connection to the blasts that disrupted the dual pipelines intended to carry Russian natural gas to Germany beneath the Baltic Sea.
Meanwhile, Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN) voiced its disapproval of extraditing another suspect, Ukrainian national Vladimir Zhuravlyov, who was arrested in Warsaw in late September.
In a statement cited by a news agency, the BBN asserted: “It is in the vital interest of the Polish state for the alleged perpetrator or perpetrators of the damage to the Nord Stream gas pipeline to avoid being held accountable for this act.”
In response to these developments, Russia has condemned Germany for lacking openness and excluding it from the investigative process.
