Türkiye Supports Two-State Solution for Cyprus Conflict

(MENAFN) Türkiye expressed its support after the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) parliament approved a resolution on Tuesday advocating for a two-state solution to the longstanding Cyprus conflict.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz described the decision as "a powerful manifestation of the Turkish Cypriot people's determination to protect their sovereignty, identity and future," in a statement shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

He further emphasized that "The federation model, which has failed to yield results for half a century, is now exhausted," highlighting the need for a new approach to resolving the issue.

According to Yilmaz, a practical, enduring, and just resolution on the island can only be achieved through the recognition of two sovereign and equal states.

He extended his congratulations to the members of the TRNC parliament for adopting this position in favor of the Turkish Cypriot people's future, peace, and dignity.

Türkiye reaffirmed its commitment to backing the Turkish Cypriots' right to self-determination and their ability to decide their own future.

The resolution received majority approval within the TRNC parliament.

The island of Cyprus has been entangled in a protracted conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, despite multiple diplomatic initiatives led by the United Nations to reach a comprehensive agreement.

Hostilities that began in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots into isolated enclaves to ensure their safety.

In 1974, following a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece, Türkiye intervened militarily as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from violence and persecution. This intervention ultimately led to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983.
