Ben-Gvir Sparks Outrage with Second Visit to Al-Aqsa
(MENAFN) Far-right Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in East Jerusalem—currently under Israeli occupation—for the second time in a week, according to a report from a Palestinian news outlet.
According to Jerusalem’s Islamic Endowments Directorate and eyewitnesses, the controversial minister accessed the highly sensitive religious site while heavily guarded by Israeli police forces.
The presence of armed security emphasized the tension surrounding his visit to the area.
Just a week earlier, Ben-Gvir made a similar unauthorized visit at the beginning of the Jewish festival of Sukkot, provoking strong condemnation from Palestinian authorities and organizations.
His recent actions have been described as deliberate provocations due to their timing and the lack of official announcement beforehand.
Typically, such visits by Israeli ministers require prior consent from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Since taking office in 2022, Ben-Gvir has entered the Al-Aqsa compound 13 times, with 10 of those visits occurring after Israel's military campaign in Gaza began in October 2023.
These repeated visits are viewed by many as politically charged and inflammatory.
On Monday, the Islamic Endowments Council in Jerusalem declared that the mosque site is facing what it called “the worst demolition of its historical and legal status in modern times,” with the situation deteriorating particularly during 2025.
The council emphasized that the compound has been subjected to “flagrant and unprecedented violations” by Israeli forces and Jewish extremist factions.
The statement also highlighted concerns over “large-scale incursions into the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” along with “desecration of its sanctity,” and concerted efforts to “alter its Islamic identity.”
These actions include the performance of “Talmudic rituals, chanting, dancing, flag-waving,” and even ritual sacrifices of animals and plants within the mosque compound—practices viewed as deeply provocative by the Palestinian community.
