Earthquake Hits Drake Passage

(MENAFN) A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 shook the Drake Passage on Friday, as reported by the US Geological Survey.

This significant seismic event struck the stretch of ocean situated between Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America and Antarctica.

The tremor was recorded at approximately 5:29 p.m. local time (2029GMT), occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers (around 6.2 miles).

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, an earlier alert regarding a possible tsunami hazard for Chile was withdrawn.

The center confirmed that there were "no tsunami threats remaining" after evaluating the situation.

Shortly after the initial quake, another tremor with a magnitude of 5.4 was registered in the Drake Passage.

This subsequent seismic activity happened around 6:34 p.m. local time (2134GMT), at the same depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles).
