EU Troika Leaders To Revive Negotiations With Iran Over Nuclear Program
Paris: The leaders of the EU Troika, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their determination on Friday to "revive negotiations with Iran" over its nuclear program.
"We are determined to revive negotiations with Iran and the United States with the aim of reaching a comprehensive, lasting, and verifiable agreement that ensures that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon," the three leaders said in a joint statement following talks on Middle East developments and global issues.
The statement added that activating the sanctions snapback mechanism "was justified."
The three European countries had previously announced that they would continue to seek a "diplomatic solution" to the crisis with Iran, but Tehran confirmed earlier this week that it was not willing to resume talks "at the present time."
The United Nations reimposed sanctions on Iran on September 28, ten years after they were lifted.
In 2015, after years of negotiations, France, UK , Germany, the US, Russia, and China reached an agreement with Tehran to restrict its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
The United States officially withdrew from the agreement on May 8, 2018.
