German Chancellor Thanks Qatar For Mediation Role In Gaza
Doha, Qatar: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed his gratitude to Qatar for its key mediation role in achieving the long-awaited ceasefire agreement in Gaza, marking a major breakthrough after more than two years of conflict.
“We have a ceasefire agreement now - finally the long-sought breakthrough,” Chancellor Merz said.“I thank President Trump for his peace initiative. I also thank our partners in Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their mediation efforts.”
Merz stressed that the focus now must be on ensuring the ceasefire takes effect and remains stable in the coming weeks, while delivering urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza's population.
As part of Germany's commitment, he announced immediate humanitarian assistance worth 29 million euros ($34 million), with additional measures to follow. Germany will also co-host, alongside Egypt, an international conference on Gaza's reconstruction and has expressed readiness to take part in the proposed peace council initiated by the United States.
German Ambassador to Qatar Oliver Owcza described the ceasefire as“a long-awaited moment of hope,” adding that Germany will continue to support efforts toward lasting peace and the realization of a two-state solution.
“The ceasefire agreement in Gaza is a vital step toward easing human suffering and opening the path to peace in the Middle East,” Owcza said.“Germany will do all in its power to help ensure that this path succeeds.”
