Turkish USV Technology Unlocks New Export Prospects Across Europe

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s defense sector is making strategic strides in unmanned surface vessel (USV) technology, unlocking new export prospects across Europe. This progress is highlighted by Havelsan’s recent collaboration with VN Maritime shipyard to integrate fully autonomous and remote-controlled mission software into Turkish Rafnar boats.

Following its supply of the Sancar USV to Turkish security forces—developed jointly with Yonca shipyard—Havelsan has expanded its USV portfolio. The company has now equipped Rafnar boats, built on the globally recognized OK hull technology, with autonomous capabilities.

Rafnar vessels, renowned for their performance in Northern Europe’s demanding maritime environments, serve both civil and security functions extensively.

Through this partnership, the Rafnar platform will execute a broad range of vital tasks—from fish detection and research to coastal defense operations—operable either remotely or autonomously.

Havelsan’s advanced mission software guarantees uninterrupted communication by incorporating sensor fusion, route optimization, collision avoidance, and robust command and control links into the system.

The Rafnar boats will be redesigned to support dual-mode operation, both manned and unmanned. Havelsan will supply essential components such as radar, LiDAR, electro-optical systems, cameras, and integration solutions.

Havelsan’s journey in USV technology started with the Sancar project and includes its proprietary network-enabled, data-integrated combat management system called “Advent.”

Initially, Havelsan and VN Maritime will target Europe’s civilian sector, aiming to expand into critical base protection, port security, and military reconnaissance and surveillance in the near future.
