Russia, Ukraine swap allegations after overnight attacks
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have issued conflicting accounts following a night marked by extensive aerial attacks, each blaming the other for widespread strikes involving drones and missiles across multiple regions.
According to statements from Russian authorities, air defense systems reportedly intercepted and destroyed 251 Ukrainian drones overnight. These included 62 over the Black Sea and five over the Azov Sea, with others allegedly neutralized across various territories such as Crimea, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, and areas near the Russian capital.
In contrast, Ukrainian officials reported that Russia carried out a wave of 762 attacks on 17 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region over a 24-hour period. These strikes reportedly resulted in one death and left 11 others injured. “The enemy carried out six airstrikes and over 500 drone attacks on civilian areas,” said Ivan Fedorov, who leads the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration. He further noted that authorities had received 240 damage reports related to homes, vehicles, and public infrastructure.
Elsewhere, officials in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv region said Russian shelling struck a local energy facility during the night, triggering widespread power outages. “At night, the enemy shelled the Ichnyan region,” stated regional energy provider Chernihivoblenergo, confirming that critical infrastructure had been hit.
In the southern region of Odessa, Governor Oleh Kiper reported that Russian drones, specifically of the “Shahed” type, targeted a civilian industrial site. The incident sparked a fire, which was promptly extinguished. No injuries were reported in that attack.
Due to the ongoing conflict and lack of independent access, verifying either side’s claims remains challenging.
