Protesters Break Into Presidential Palace Courtyard In Tbilisi

A group of men broke through the fence and attacked several members of the security guard. Soon after, special forces and hundreds of patrol police officers arrived from the residence building. Tear gas was used against the demonstrators.

Among the participants in the assault were well-equipped men, some wearing bulletproof vests. However, security forces pushed the protesters away from the building. The situation on the ground is currently relatively calm.

Hundreds more people marched from Freedom Square to Atoneli Street, demanding access to the presidential palace.

As Ukrinform reports, the protesters moved toward the residence after a call from Murtaz Zodelava, head of the political council of the opposition United National Movement and former prosecutor general.

Earlier, eight opposition parties in Georgia announced in July that they would refuse to take part in the upcoming municipal elections in October.

Today, local elections are being held across Georgia.

Last November, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Georgia would withdraw from negotiations on joining the European Union and decline EU financial assistance until 2028.
