Washington Calls On Countries To Implement Restored Sanctions Against Iran

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The U.S. Treasury Secretary urged all nations to enforce restored UN sanctions on Iran, warning Tehran's nuclear programme threatens peace, security, and international stability.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bassant said the UN Security Council's decision to restore sanctions on Iran shows the world will not bow to Tehran's threats. He stressed that all UN member states are obliged to immediately enforce the measures.

Speaking on Sunday, Bassant described Iran's nuclear programme as a threat to U.S. peace and prosperity. He added that President Trump had given Tehran every opportunity to reach a deal, but its leaders“remained unserious.”

The U.S. State Department also issued a statement urging American allies to enforce the sanctions without delay. It said Iran's leadership must be pressured into acting in the best interests of both its people and global security.

Washington further insisted that Iran should accept direct talks without delay, secrecy, or bad faith, and move forward with genuine negotiations on its nuclear activities.

The move followed the expiry of the 30-day deadline under UN Security Council Resolution 2231. As a result, all previous sanctions on Iran automatically came back into force on Sunday.

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom had triggered the snapback process, accusing Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear agreement. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, maintaining its programme is peaceful.

The restored sanctions target Iran's economy and military. They ban arms sales and ballistic missile activity, freeze overseas assets of major institutions, restrict foreign investment, and reimpose bans on oil and gas exports. Dozens of Iranian officials and entities, including the IRGC, Defence Ministry, and Atomic Energy Organization, were also re-listed.
