India Introduces New Online Entry System For Foreign Travelers
India has implemented a new digital entry system requiring all foreign visitors to complete and submit an online arrival form at least 72 hours before travel. The new rule, which came into effect on October 1, 2025, aims to streamline immigration procedures and enhance border security.
Under the updated policy, tourists, business travelers, students, conference participants, and medical visitors must fill out the e-Arrival Card through an online portal before reaching India. This replaces the old paper-based forms that were previously distributed on flights or filled out upon arrival at airports.
Officials say the shift to a fully digital system is designed to simplify arrivals and reduce long queues at passport control. The Indian Immigration Department stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize the country's immigration system and improve the travel experience for international visitors.
Travelers are required to provide personal and travel details such as passport number, nationality, travel purpose, address in India, duration of stay, and countries visited during the six days prior to arrival. No additional documents are required to be uploaded, and applicants receive an email confirmation once the form is submitted.
Although the digital confirmation is sufficient for entry, authorities recommend that travelers carry a printed copy of the form for convenience during inspection at border checkpoints. Indian citizens are exempt from this requirement, though all foreign travelers must still hold a valid visa.
The government has emphasized that this digital transition is part of its push for a paperless and efficient immigration process. Officials believe the new system will enhance both security and convenience, making arrivals smoother and faster at busy Indian airports.
Experts note that the e-Arrival Card reflects India's growing focus on digital governance and technological modernization. The move is expected to position India as a more efficient, traveler-friendly destination while ensuring stricter data management and border safety.
