U.S. Vance Says Prolonged Government Shutdown to Cause Workforce Cuts

(MENAFN) U.S. Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning Wednesday, saying that if the federal government shutdown continues, workforce reductions will be inevitable. He placed the blame squarely on Democratic lawmakers for the impasse.

"Let's be honest, if this thing drags on for another few days, or, God forbid, another few weeks, we are going to have to lay people off," Vance stated during a press briefing at the White House.

Echoing the urgency, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the same briefing that she anticipated layoffs to begin “very soon.”

In past shutdowns, federal personnel deemed essential have been required to keep working without pay, while hundreds of thousands of others are furloughed. These workers typically receive back pay once government operations resume.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer took to X to rebuke Republicans over the budget deadlock. "Republicans shut down the government because they can't be bothered to protect health care for Americans across this country," he wrote.
