India, Russia Kick Off 'Indra 2025' Military Exercises

(MENAFN) India and Russia have kicked off the ‘Indra 2025’ joint military exercises, a 15-day operation underway in the desert terrain near Bikaner, according to a statement from the Russian Embassy in New Delhi.

Approximately 250 Russian troops are participating alongside Indian forces in the large-scale maneuvers, which aim to enhance cooperation and coordination between the two long-time defense partners.

“The joint exercises confirm the nature of the special, privileged strategic partnership between Moscow and New Delhi,” the embassy stated, emphasizing the strength of bilateral ties.

The drills, designed to simulate combat operations in desert conditions, are part of the ongoing Indra exercise series, held biennially since their inception. The previous edition took place between 2021 and 2022, with hosting duties alternating between the two nations.

India’s Defense Ministry noted that the Indra series, along with other joint exercises such as Avia Indra and Indra Navy, has played a vital role in sharing operational knowledge, refining tactics, and strengthening military interoperability.

Earlier this year, in April, India and Russia conducted Indra Navy 2025 in the Bay of Bengal, featuring complex operations like formation maneuvers, communication drills, and live-fire exercises targeting aerial and maritime threats.

Both Moscow and New Delhi have underscored that these joint operations are not directed at any specific nation and are unrelated to current global geopolitical tensions.

Beyond battlefield coordination, defense ties have matured significantly. What began as a buyer-seller dynamic has evolved into deep military-technical cooperation, with landmark projects such as the BrahMos cruise missile, licensed production of T-90 tanks and fighter jets, and indigenous manufacturing of AK-203 rifles under India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The two countries also hold annual defense consultations, rotating between the capitals, to assess progress and plan future strategic collaborations.
