EU Condemned Russia's Massive Attack On Ukraine And Called For Tougher Sanctions

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) According to Ukrinform, the head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, noted that such large-scale combined attacks have, unfortunately, become commonplace.

"Russia launched close to 600 drones and 40 missiles against Ukraine, targeting civilian infrastructure and spreading destruction. Kyiv and Kyiv region were the main targets. In Solomianskyy district, a five-storey residential building was struck; the Institute of Cardiology was damaged and at least two people were killed there. In Holosiivskyy, Dniprovskyy, and Darnytskyy districts, residential and non-residential buildings were hit," Maternova wrote on Facebook .

She said that this night is yet another reminder that Russia is deliberately attacking the civilian population in an attempt to terrorize it.

“It will not succeed. Ukraine has the right to live in peace and security. The EU will continue supporting Ukraine's righteous war effort, providing humanitarian aid, and helping rebuild what was destroyed,” Maternova emphasized.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide drew attention to Russia's hypocrisy on social media X :“ in the halls of the United Nations, Russia speaks of peace; on the ground in Ukraine, its illegal war continues day and night.”

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, recalling NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's words that“nothing useful came out of the mouth” of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, noted on social media X : "The NATO Secretary General was right - listening to Lavrov's speeches is worthless. Nothing good and true comes out of his mouth. Yesterday, Lavrov made another speech, this time - at the UN Security Council, and lied about Russia's commitment to UN Charter and its principles, and to peace. At the same time, Russia showered Ukraine with missiles and drones, thus showing off its real - terrorist - face."

He called the attack one of the largest since 2022 and a deliberate escalation aimed at terrorizing civilians, and called on Europe to stop buying Russian gas and oil, increase pressure on Russia, and provide Ukraine with reliable air defense.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted on social media X that the attack, carried out after a week of the UN General Assembly, exposes Russia's false narratives and once again shows the world the true face of the aggressor.“Now is the time to approve the next EU sanctions package and keep the pressure on Russia's war machine,” he urged.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže also condemned Russia's attack on civilians.“The only way to stop Russia is to degrade its military capabilities, while supplying Ukraine with right weapons to increase its ability to strike legitimate military targets and defend herself,” she wrote on social media X .

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna noted that while the world is gathering at the UN General Assembly to“ uphold diplomacy and the principles of the UN Charter, Russia responds with brutality, launching a 12-hour barrage of drones and missiles against Ukraine.”

“A terror state strikes again. Enough hesitation. The response must be immediate and unforgiving: escalate sanctions, impose tariffs, cut ties. Isolation must be total,” he wrote on social media.
