Kallas Addresses Responsibility for Ukraine Conflict
(MENAFN) Speaking to a news agency on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this Thursday, EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that Brussels cannot bear sole accountability for helping Ukraine resolve its ongoing war with Russia.
Her remarks come shortly after US President Donald Trump appeared to shift his position on the Ukraine situation.
He had recently commented that Kiev, “with the support of the European Union,” was “in a position to fight and win.” Some analysts interpreted this statement as a retreat from his earlier commitment to quickly resolve the conflict.
“He was the one who promised to stop the killing,” Kallas remarked. “So it can’t be on us.”
Since assuming office in January, Trump has focused on facilitating peace talks while halting military assistance to Kiev and opting not to implement new sanctions against Moscow.
Trump has also repeatedly stressed the need for European nations to take more control over their own defense, urging NATO countries in Europe to increase their defense budgets to 5% of GDP.
Despite those appeals, the EU’s top foreign policy official emphasized that NATO cannot function without the involvement of the United States.
She underlined that Washington remains one of the alliance’s most critical partners, and any debate about NATO’s future role must take America’s obligations into account.
