RIYADH, Sept 25 (KUNA) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Thursday held an emergency meeting of its Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission to discuss the humanitarian and legal impacts of the recent Israeli occupation attack on Qatar.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Taha, in remarks delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Jerusalem Samir Bakr said the targeting of a member state engaged in mediation and peace efforts is a serious threat to international peace and security.
He called on the Human Rights Commission in coordination with international human rights mechanisms, to raise awareness on the human rights and humanitarian implications of the Israeli attack on Qatar and other ongoing violations, while pressing legal and diplomatic efforts with unified messaging.
Taha said the meeting allows member states to send a cohesive message of solidarity with Qatar against a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter.
He praised the commission's independent role in promoting human rights in line with international law.
Taha also strongly condemned ongoing Israeli violations in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, including forced displacement and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
In addition, he renewed calls for the UN Security Council to take decisive action to impose a comprehensive ceasefire, ensure humanitarian aid access to Gaza, support UNRWA, and hold Israel accountable for its violations.(end)
