Amman, Sept. 23 (Petra) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged an immediate end to the war in Gaza, alongside negotiations for peace and the return of all remaining hostages.
"We succeeded in bringing most of the hostages back from Gaza, and we want to secure the release of those who remain, all at once," Trump said in his opening remarks at the high-level debate of the United Nations General Assembly's 80th session in New York.
He warned that the past six years had ushered in "an era of major crises," noting that while he had once believed ending the war in Ukraine would be easy, Russia's conflict was being fueled by oil purchases from India and China. "If Russia is not ready to end the war in Ukraine, we are prepared to impose effective tariffs that will bring the war to a quick close," he said.
Trump also said his administration was working to dismantle networks of terrorism and narcotics traffickers, adding, "We have started using the military to eliminate drug smugglers. We want to help countries, but assistance must be fair. Trade between nations must be reciprocal, and those who do not comply will face tariffs as an act of self-defense."
He criticized the United Nations, saying the U.S. had gained "nothing" from the organization. "The UN's potential is enormous, but it is nowhere near achieving it," he added.
Trump said his administration is committed to reducing the risks posed by dangerous weapons, calling for the destruction of biological arms and a halt to the development of nuclear weapons. He cautioned against the threat of man-made diseases, announcing the launch of a new verification system for biological experiments, and urged the UN to support the initiative.
