1.3 Lakh MT Fruit Transported From Kashmir Valley In 10 Days

Srinagar- Over 1.3 lakh metric tonnes of fresh fruit have been transported from the Kashmir Valley to markets across the country in the last 10 days, an official said on Monday.

At a press conference, Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg said that daily, around 1,500–2,000 trucks laden with fresh fruit and other materials accumulate in the valley. These are dispatched via the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the Mughal Road on an alternate-day basis.

“In the last 10 days, 1.37 lakh metric tonnes of fruit have been dispatched through the National Highway, Mughal Road, and the parcel train,” Garg said.

He explained that a standard operating procedure (SOP), formulated by the Chief Secretary in coordination with district administrations, BRO, traffic, and National Highway authorities, ensures smooth transportation of fresh fruits and essential supplies. Traffic police personnel monitor the SOP round-the-clock.

“If traffic on the National Highway moves from Srinagar to Jammu on a particular day, the upward movement occurs on the Mughal Road from Jammu to Srinagar. This pattern reverses the next day to ensure uninterrupted movement of essentials,” Garg said.

Referring to the condition of the highway, which remained closed for vehicular traffic recently due to inclement weather and landslides, Garg said restoration work is progressing rapidly.

“Earlier, around 1,500–2,000 trucks used to ply daily. Now, 4,000 – 4,500 trucks are moving. Today, nearly 2,000 trucks from Qazigund moved towards Jammu and are expected to reach by evening,” he added.
He further noted that on the Mughal Road, 1,800–1,900 trucks moved towards Jammu on Sunday, prioritizing the evacuation of fresh fruits.
