Trichy To Get Food Quality Testing Lab To Strengthen Export Potential
The facility aims to help exporters comply with global food safety and quality standards, thereby opening access to new markets.
Trichy airport currently handles nearly 600 tonnes of international freight every month, mainly perishable produce such as fruits, vegetables and flowers.
However, exporters face hurdles in entering European and other high-standard markets due to the absence of local testing and certification.
The new lab will provide farmers and traders in central Tamil Nadu with easier and more affordable access to mandatory quality checks.
The facility will feature integrated packing houses and processing units, covering a wide range of food categories-from raw agricultural produce to ready-to-eat items. It will test for nutritional values, pesticide residues, and heavy metals, aligning with international requirements.
At present, exporters must rely on labs in Chennai or Hosur for Maximum Residue Level (MRL) certification. This compels many to route their shipments via Bengaluru, increasing costs and diverting revenue from Trichy. With the local lab in place, the process will become faster, cheaper, and more efficient.
Industry stakeholders expect the lab to not only reduce export barriers but also encourage diversification. In addition to mangoes, pomegranates and vegetables, products like nuts, pulses, grains, poultry, seafood, and snacks are likely to benefit.
The development also strengthens the case for securing dedicated cargo flights once the expanded runway at Trichy airport is operational.
