Brussels: NATO announced Friday that it intercepted Russian warplanes that violated Estonian airspace.

The NATO said in a statement that it immediately took action and intercepted the Russian warplanes.

In a post on the social media platform X, the NATO said: "This is yet another example of reckless Russian behavior and NATO's ability to respond."

For its part, Estonia announced Friday that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for a few minutes, in what it described as an "unprecedented" escalation on NATO's eastern border.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Russia had violated his country's airspace four times since the beginning of this year, and that "Russia's ever-increasing testing of borders and aggression must be responded to by rapidly strengthening political and economic pressure."

Estonia is the third NATO member state to report a Russian violation of its airspace in recent weeks.

Romania announced last Sunday that a Russian drone had entered its airspace during a raid on Ukraine, while Poland said a week ago that more than 20 Russian drones had entered its airspace before being shot down.
