Turkish Authorities Arrest Istanbul District Mayor in Corruption Probe

(MENAFN) Turkish officials have ordered the detention of 48 individuals, including Hasan Mutlu, mayor of Istanbul’s opposition-led Bayrampasa district, amid a sweeping corruption investigation, according to a broadcaster on Saturday.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated a major operation early Saturday linked to allegations of embezzlement, extortion, bribery, and bid rigging implicating public officials in Bayrampasa.

During early morning raids, financial crimes units detained 37 suspects, notably Mayor Hasan Mutlu, affiliated with the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), along with Deputy Mayors Atilla Ozen, Hakan Bas, Lutfi Kadıogulları, Gunduz Kalkan, and Legal Affairs Director Bilgehan Yagcı. Authorities subsequently arrested seven more suspects, while searches continue for others still at large.

This crackdown follows nearly a year of ongoing investigations targeting CHP-led municipalities throughout Türkiye, resulting in the detention of hundreds of individuals.
