Trump Signals Readiness for New Sanctions on Russia
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is prepared to introduce heavy sanctions against Russia, provided all NATO members agree to halt purchases of Russian oil and implement similar actions.
In a message shared on his Truth Social account, Trump declared:
“A LETTER SENT BY PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP TO ALL NATO NATIONS AND, THE WORLD: ‘I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.’”
Trump emphasized that NATO’s resolve to challenge Moscow has been “far less than 100%,” criticizing the ongoing acquisition of Russian oil by “some” members as “shocking.”
He further suggested that NATO collectively impose tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China, asserting that it “has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful Tariffs will break that grip.”
Trump also stated: “This is not TRUMP’S WAR (it would never have started if I was President!), it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s WAR. I am only here to help stop it, and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives.”
Previously, Trump had warned of imposing secondary sanctions on nations continuing to import Russian oil if no advancement is achieved toward ending the conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted since 2022.
He has already enforced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, pointing to its ongoing purchases of Russian crude.
Meanwhile, the G7 nations along with the EU severed trade relations and placed a price ceiling on Russian oil. In turn, Russia expanded its energy sales to countries like China and India.
