Israeli Airstrikes Force Displacement of Over 6,000 Civilians in Gaza
(MENAFN) Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City on Saturday forced the displacement of over 6,000 civilians, with Gaza’s Civil Defense reporting ongoing destruction as the Israeli military intensifies its operations to seize control of the city.
"More than 6,000 civilians have been left homeless after their homes were targeted today," said Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense, in a statement.
The Israeli military's bombardment of Gaza City, which began early Saturday, has struck residential buildings, including multiple residential towers and three schools run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
Basal described the airstrikes as unannounced, which has resulted in numerous civilian casualties. "Residents of Gaza City are now living in extremely difficult conditions under the ongoing siege and bombardment," he added.
He also issued a stark warning: "More than one million people, including thousands of children, are at risk of dying as a result of the current Israeli policies."
As of now, nearly 1.3 million people remain trapped in Gaza City, according to the Gaza Government Media Office, with many now being forced by Israel to flee toward Al-Mawasi and Khan Younis, where an additional 800,000 people are already surviving in dire conditions with insufficient basic needs.
Since the escalation began on August 11, the Israeli military has destroyed approximately 1,600 residential towers and buildings, along with 13,000 tents, forcing the displacement of over 100,000 people, the Media Office reported.
The remaining population in Gaza City has been concentrated in the western neighborhoods, which have faced some of the heaviest bombardment since Friday.
This military escalation forms part of the ongoing "Gideon’s Chariots 2" operation, a ground offensive launched on September 3 aimed at taking full control of Gaza City. The operation has drawn significant criticism from within Israel, where opponents warn it could endanger both Israeli soldiers and captives held in the region.
Since the conflict's eruption in October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 64,800 Palestinians, while the territory continues to suffer widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis, including severe food shortages.
Israel is currently facing charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice over its actions in Gaza.
