Protests Erupt in Sweden’s Stockholm to Denounce Gaza Genocide
(MENAFN) Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Sweden’s capital on Saturday to denounce Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, as well as alleged plans to seize control of the territory and forcibly expel Palestinians.
The protest kicked off in the Odenplan district, where attendees held signs reading, "Zionist Israel out of Palestine," "No to genocide," and "Freedom for Palestine." The crowd later marched toward the Swedish Foreign Ministry, urging stronger action from the government.
In an interview with the media, Swedish activist Malin Akertrom dismissed the notion that Hamas bears primary responsibility for the conflict, calling it "completely absurd because Israel’s attacks on Palestine did not start on Oct. 7," and asserted that crimes against humanity are taking place in Gaza.
Akertrom also drew parallels between Palestinian resistance and Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, asserting that "people in Gaza are dying of hunger. The same is happening in the West Bank. Yet the media presents this as a war between Israel and Hamas, which is misleading. Palestinians are defending their land. Under international law, they have the right to resist, just as Ukraine does."
She went on to criticize Sweden’s humanitarian policy, pointing out that while the country had accepted injured civilians from Ukraine, it had rejected those from Gaza. She called it a "hypocritical stance."
The demonstration is part of a growing wave of protests across Europe, where citizens have increasingly voiced anger over civilian suffering in Gaza and frustration with what they view as inaction by Western governments.
