Nearly 500 Displaced in Malaysia Due to Severe Flooding
(MENAFN) Severe flooding displaced more than 480 individuals across Malaysia on Saturday, with the northern Borneo state of Sabah experiencing the worst impact, local officials reported.
Sabah has been battered by days of relentless rainfall, leading to the evacuation of 420 residents, who are now seeking shelter at five emergency relief centers.
In neighboring Sarawak, the social welfare department reported that 68 people had been evacuated by 2 p.m. local time Saturday.
"I urge residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, comply with the instructions of the authorities, and evacuate immediately when directed, as the safety of your family's lives is the top priority," Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a statement on Friday.
He emphasized that authorities and security forces must intensify rescue operations, meet the basic needs of the displaced, and provide optimal protection until normalcy is restored.
The country's meteorological department has issued warnings for persistent heavy rains and strong winds throughout the region.
