Porsche Taycan Prototype Suffers Diffuser Damage During Nürburgring Lap - Arabian Post
The prototype-believed to be a GT4 RS variant-made two attempts at pushing past current benchmarks, with factory driver Lars Kern at the wheel for at least one of the runs. While on its fastest push, the diffuser took severe damage that prevented further progress. Another example of the vehicle, painted purple, completed laps without visible damage, though its setup was described as“not optimal,” leading to scrapped times.
Porsche is aiming to reclaim its prominence in the EV lap record stakes. The company's Taycan Turbo GT registered a 7:07.55 at the track, but that was overshadowed by a newer competitor from Xiaomi-the SU7 Ultra-which clocked in faster earlier this year. The prototype's radical aerodynamics, widened fenders, significant rear wing, carbon-fibre front wings, front canards and that aggressive diffuser point to Porsche's efforts to breach the seven-minute mark for an electric production car.
Engineering challenges are evident. Diffuser damage suggests that suspension setup or ground clearance is under stress during full-throttle cornering over undulating track surfaces. The bottoming issue forced Porsche to abandon at least one run. Meanwhile, the purple variant's compromised balance indicates that power, grip and aero have yet to be harmonised.
Underpinning the vehicle are upgraded aerodynamics courtesy of Manthey, Porsche's motorsport partner. Manthey's branding is visible in the testing areas and on the prototype units. There are indications that power output may be elevated beyond the Taycan Turbo GT's already high figures-operating modes, thermal systems and motor tuning are likely under revision to deliver the consistency needed for a legitimate record attempt.
