(MENAFN- Live Mint) Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will posthumously award the highest US civilian honor to murdered controversial right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. He was also a close Trump ally.

"I'm pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom," Trump said during a ceremony at the Pentagon marking the deadly 9/11 terror attacks.

Charlie Kirk, aged 31-years-old, was shot dead while addressing an event at the Utah Valley University on Wednesday, September 10.

A high-powered rifle, which police officials believe was used to carry out the shooting has been discovered.

However, manhunt for the shooter – who is still at large – is currently underway.

Who is Charlie Kirk?

At the age of just 31-years, Charlie Kirk had become a key figure in US politics. He was the CEO and co-founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA.

Kirk had co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 to promote conservative viewpoints on campuses nationwide, using social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube to amplify his message.

His social media and eponymous daily podcast often shared clips of him debating with students about issues such as transgender identity, climate change, faith and family values.

Charlie Kirk's death – how did the incident unfold?

Videos circulating on social media showed Charlie Kirk speaking into a microphone under a white tent adorned with slogans like“The American Comeback” and“Prove Me Wrong.”

A single gunshot erupted, after which Kirk was seen reaching for his neck, with blood streaming across his neck. Spectators screamed and scattered as the incident unfolded.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is considered the US government's highest civilian honor.
