GCC Reaffirms Right To Development As Key To Equality


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Sept 10 (KUNA) - The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reaffirmed their strong commitment to the right to development, calling it a fundamental pillar for achieving human rights and equality.
Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council's 60th session, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva Naser Alhayen, emphasized in a statement the need for a broad understanding of this right, beyond narrow interpretations.
Alhayen highlighted the GCC's progress in empowering women through education, healthcare, economic participation, and protection from violence; he stressed the role of the family as the core unit of society and development.
The GCC also rejected terms lacking international consensus, particularly those related to sexual and reproductive rights, stating they conflict with religious and cultural values and cannot be imposed on all nations, he continued
Alhayen reiterated the GCC's commitment to balanced development, national sovereignty, and fair global resource distribution. (end)
