Belarus Claims Downing Drones Entering Poland’s Airspace

(MENAFN) Belarus has claimed it shot down several drones that entered its airspace during a night of intense aerial attacks between Russia and Ukraine. According to Pavel Muraveiko, Chief of the General Staff, these drones were diverted from their intended paths by electronic warfare.

In a video statement released by the Defense Ministry, Muraveiko stated that Belarusian air defenses successfully destroyed some of the wayward drones. "Some of the lost drones were destroyed by our country's Air Defense Forces over the territory of the republic," he said, though he did not specify the exact number.

Muraveiko also highlighted a crucial information exchange with Polish and Lithuanian forces, which helped to track the unmanned aircraft. "In fairness, it should be noted that the Polish side also informed the Belarusian forces on duty about the approach of unidentified aircraft from the territory of Ukraine to the border of the Republic of Belarus," Muraveiko added.

Muraveiko described the cooperation as a vital aspect of regional security, stating that it helps foster trust and bolster overall stability. He finished by confirming that Belarus will continue its commitment to sharing aerial information with Poland and the Baltic nations.

This incident occurred as Russia claimed to have intercepted 122 Ukrainian drones, and Ukraine reported shooting down 386 Russian drones and 27 missiles.

Meanwhile, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed that fighter jets were scrambled after "drone-type objects repeatedly" violated its airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that "around two dozen of Russian drones" might have entered Polish airspace, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that at least 19 airspace violations were recorded.
