Trump Urges Maximum Tariffs on China, India
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has urged the European Union to enforce tariffs reaching up to 100% on imports from China and India, aiming to coordinate efforts to pressure Moscow, a news agency reported on Tuesday.
The newspaper noted that Trump issued this request during a recent call-in to a session between senior US and EU officials in Washington, where measures to escalate the economic impact of the Ukraine conflict on Russia were discussed.
One US official stated that Washington was “ready to go, ready to go right now, but we’re only going to do this if our European partners step up with us.”
“The president came on this morning and his view is that the obvious approach here is, let’s all put on dramatic tariffs and keep the tariffs on until the Chinese agree to stop buying the oil,” the source said. Another official added that the US was willing to “mirror” any tariffs imposed by Brussels on Beijing and New Delhi.
EU representatives had already started considering potential secondary sanctions against China for its energy imports from Moscow, though they emphasized that discussions remained at an “early stage” and were contingent on US backing, according to an earlier report from the news agency.
Meanwhile, New Delhi has resisted external pressure to reduce its dependency on Russian crude. Last month, Trump increased tariffs on Indian products to 50%, citing India’s energy relationship with Moscow.
