KUWAIT, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- Governor of Ahmadi and Chairman of the Green Urban Development Initiatives Committee, Sheikh Homoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah affirmed in Tuesday that launching the "ECO" initiative for recycling electronic waste reflects national efforts aimed at promoting sustainable development, protecting the environment, and ensuring public health protection.
He stressed that raising community awareness of the dangers posed by electronic waste to natural resources and human well-being, if not properly managed, is essential for building a responsible culture that aligns with Kuwait's vision for sustainable growth and environmental protection.
In a statement to KUNA during the launce of the "Towards a School Environment Free of Electronic Waste," he highlighted cooperation between ECO Incubator, the Ministry of Education, Kuwait Airways, and the Environment Public Authority.
He explained that electronic waste has become one of the most significant modern pollution sources in the technological age, requiring joint governmental, community, and voluntary efforts to encourage responsible disposal, effective treatment, and recycling practices to safeguard future generations' health and environment.
Sheikh Homoud emphasized that this initiative represents an innovative model of collaboration between the public and private sectors, underlining that community and school-level engagement can reinforce sustainable practices while mitigating environmental threats associated with growing amounts of electronic waste.
He concluded his speech by stressing that the ECO initiative is a pioneering step toward a more sustainable future where technology serves humanity without harming nature, urging collective action to create a safe environment and secure a healthier life.
For his part, Jassim Al-Abouh, founder of ECO Incubator, explained that the initiative was launched in partnership with Tadweer Company and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, under the patronage of Minister Sayed Al-Tabtabai, to promote environmental awareness and sustainability culture.
He revealed that the campaign will continue until January, covering 12 secondary schools across Kuwait by distributing dedicated recycling bins and organizing interactive workshops, aiming to strengthen environmental responsibility among students, parents, and society at large.
Al-Abouh praised the support received from the Environment Public Authority, the Ministry of Education, the Governor of Ahmadi, and Kuwait Airways, affirming that the initiative is a practical step toward reinforcing community partnership in protecting the environment and achieving sustainability goals.
Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Education, Hamad Al-Hamad, stated that the Ministry's participation reflects its commitment to environmental responsibility, noting that six schools from different regions are participating to spread awareness among students, teachers, and families.
He added that since its launch in 2023, the initiative has witnessed increasing amounts of recycled waste, demonstrating its effectiveness and positive environmental impact while highlighting the Ministry's dedication to fulfilling its broader social and environmental responsibilities.
Furthermore, Chairman of Kuwait Airways, Abdulmohsen Al-Faqaan, emphasized that the airline is keen to support national initiatives, affirming that as part of Kuwait's social fabric, the company carries strategic responsibility toward issues of long-term significance such as environmental protection.
He underlined that the younger generation is the foundation for spreading awareness within society, pointing out that such initiatives confront pressing challenges including electronic waste and carbon emissions, which pose risks to both public health and global ecosystems.
Al-Faqaan also affirmed Kuwait Airways' commitment through awareness campaigns, modern fleet upgrades that reduce carbon emissions, applying environmental policies in workshops and maintenance, and supporting recycling initiatives across various materials, ultimately benefiting both society and the environment.
