NEW YORK, Sept 10 (KUNA) -- UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix stressed the need to strengthen UN peacekeeping operations, given the difficulty of achieving lasting political solutions and the world's continued "uncertain future."
This came during a meeting held by the UN Security Council late Tuesday, in New York, on the future of peace operations. The Council heard briefings from Lacroix and Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo.
Lacroix affirmed that peacekeeping is "not a luxury," but rather a lifeline for millions who depend on it for a future free of fear, pointing to the record number of conflicts last year, with 61, the highest number since 1946.
He called for leveraging the valuable experiences and lessons of nearly eight decades of peacekeeping to meet the legitimate expectations of peoples regarding the fulfillment of the UN Charter.
Further, he noted that the future of peacekeeping requires "a United Nations capable and ready to respond" through adaptable missions specifically designed to meet needs on the ground, guided by robust political strategies and drawing on the expertise of the Organization and its partners.
In turn, DiCarlo said that UN political missions operate in an environment characterized by "increasing geopolitical fragmentation," while conflicts have become increasingly internationalized, "with the involvement of global and regional actors influencing their internal dynamics."
She emphasized that "we must learn from the past," noting that special political missions have been at the forefront of the organization's work, supporting nearly 100 countries around the world. (end)
