Russia attacks Ukrainian village killing over twenty people

(MENAFN) Ukrainian officials announced Tuesday that a Russian airstrike on a settlement in the eastern Donetsk region left at least 23 people dead.

According to local authorities, the attack occurred around 10:40 a.m. local time (0740 GMT). Lyman Mayor Oleksandr Zhuravlev said, "At the moment, 23 people have died and 18 have been injured," noting that three of the wounded are in critical condition.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, describing it as “a brutally savage Russian airstrike with an aerial bomb on the rural settlement of Yarova in the Donetsk region.” He said the assault happened “at the very moment when pensions were being disbursed,” adding that over 20 people lost their lives. Zelenskyy urged global powers to react: “Such Russian strikes must not be left without an appropriate response from the world … A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20. Strong actions are needed to make Russia stop bringing death.”

Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin reported separately that at least 21 were killed and a similar number injured. He said emergency teams were on-site assisting victims and working to assess the full scale of the attack.

Ukrainian officials did not provide further information, while Moscow has not issued an immediate reaction.

The village of Yarova, where the incident occurred, lies roughly 14 kilometers northwest of Lyman, a key battlefield in the ongoing conflict. It is also situated about 23 kilometers north of Sloviansk, close to Kramatorsk—the temporary administrative hub of Donetsk since the city itself came under Russian control in 2014.
