Trump to pay eighty-three million dollars for slander lawsuit

(MENAFN) A federal appeals court has ruled that US President Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defaming her, following her allegations that he sexually assaulted her decades ago. The court upheld a civil jury’s finding that Trump repeatedly attacked Carroll’s credibility on social media through a smear campaign.

The three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Trump’s appeal, describing the jury’s award as “fair and reasonable.” In their ruling, the judges noted that Carroll faced “ongoing and prolific harassment,” including numerous death threats and threats of physical harm.

Trump’s lawyers had argued that the $65 million punitive damages were excessive and requested a new trial, citing presidential immunity. The court dismissed these arguments, stating that Trump’s “extraordinary and unprecedented” false attacks justified the award.

Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, welcomed the ruling as a vindication for her client.
