Brain Fever Claims Life of 56-Year-Old Woman in India's Kerala
(MENAFN) A 56-year-old woman from Malappuram district in Kerala succumbed on Monday to Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), also known as brain fever, health officials confirmed.
The patient was admitted last week to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode district, where she remained in critical condition until her death, a health official said.
Since August 14, the southern Indian state has recorded five fatalities linked to this rare but deadly brain infection.
Currently, 11 patients are being treated for PAM at the hospital, with several in serious condition.
Kerala has reported a total of 42 PAM cases this year, marking a worrying rise in infections.
PAM is a rare, often fatal brain infection caused by free-living amoebae that thrive in stagnant freshwater bodies like ponds and lakes. The disease develops when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to invade the brain.
