Srinagar- The defacing of an inauguration plaque at the revered Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar, which bore the State Emblem of India, has sparked a political controversy.

J&K Waqf Board Chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi on Thursday lashed out at those behind the act, terming it an“attack on the Constitution” and“an assault on the lovers of the Prophet.”

“This is not just vandalism-it is a direct attack on the Constitution and on the sanctity of Hazratbal,” Dr Andrabi said at an emergency press conference.“Those who committed this crime must face the harshest punishment. Slap PSA on them.”

Without naming him directly, Andrabi hit out at NC leader and Zadibal MLA Tanveer Sadiq, who had earlier objected to the emblem's placement at the shrine.“A leader tweeted about it. I don't think he deserves to be called a leader. These people don't even know what religion is-they fed militants in their homes,” she alleged.

She further warned the administration against any leniency.“If this plaque had carried the name of Omar Abdullah, would they have dared to touch it? I want to tell the LG, DGP, and IGP-do not spare anyone. Otherwise, I will go on a hunger strike,” she said, urging police to file an FIR against the politician who tweeted about the issue.
