First Made-In-India 32-Bit Microprocessor Chip Launched At Semicon India 2025

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Sep 2 (KNN) India marked a significant milestone in its semiconductor ambitions with the launch of the country's first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, Vikram, at the Semicon India 2025 conference.

At the event, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented to Prime Minister Modi the processor developed by ISRO's Semiconductor Laboratory, along with test chips from four approved projects.

The Vikram processor is designed to withstand the extreme environmental conditions of space launch vehicles, underscoring efforts to reduce reliance on imported chips.

Vaishnaw described the launch as 'a milestone in India's semiconductor journey'.

Providing an update on infrastructure progress, the Minister said construction of five semiconductor fabrication units is currently underway.

One pilot line has been completed, with two more units expected to begin production in the coming months. Designs for five additional units are advancing, supported by ecosystem partners.

Vaishnaw positioned India as a stable investment destination amid global policy turbulence, citing strong domestic demand and robust electronics growth-production has increased sixfold in the past decade, while exports have risen eightfold.

About 20 percent of the world's chip design engineers are based in India, with global firms such as Qualcomm, Intel, Nvidia, Broadcom, and MediaTek operating major R&D centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Noida, according to a Bastion Research report cited by ET.

Launched in 2021, the Semicon India Programme under ISM 1.0 offers incentives worth about Rs 76,000 crore to attract global manufacturers.

The unveiling of Vikram and the progress on fabrication facilities highlight India's dual focus on boosting domestic manufacturing capacity and reinforcing its role in the global chip design ecosystem-both viewed as critical for economic growth and strategic independence.
