Catherine is Biological and Medicinal Chemist in the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Sciences at Stellenbosch University. She has an interest in studying the activity of natural and dietary compounds in the prevention and treatment of disease. Working at the interface of chemistry and biology, she is interested in understanding how a small molecule interacts with its biological environment to bring about its medicinal effect. Her work involves studying the effects of small molecules in different models with a particular emphasis on cancer, as well as synthetic modification to study the mechanism and to generate more active analogues for therapeutic intervention. She has published over 50 research outputs including patents and book chapters in the area of synthetic and medicinal chemistry, phytomedicine and cancer. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of her work, she collaborates with a diverse team of researchers. She is a director and shareholder or Phyenti, A SU spin out company that formulates and produces plant- based medicines.
