Amman, Sept. 1 (Petra) – The Jordan Media Credibility Observatory (Akeed) documented 91 rumors circulating in the month of August that were disseminated through local and foreign media outlets and social platforms.
It defined a rumor as "false or inaccurate information related to public affairs or domestic interests, which reaches more than 5,000 people via digital media, regardless of being officially denied", it said in its monthly report on Monday, adding that it developed "a quantitative and qualitative methodology" to track rumors,
Fifteen of these were officially denied, an increase of two from July when 13 rumors were denied, the report found out.
Economic rumors topped the August list with 25 in total, or 28 percent, including 14 about mismanagement of public funds and six related to water and electricity.
The report also said 10 rumors, 11 percent of the total, originated from foreign sources. By medium, 80 rumors (88 percent) were spread via social media platforms, compared with 11 (12 percent) published by news outlets.
The observatory said it continues to publish fact-checking reports on its website with the aim of raising awareness on the danger of spreading misinformation and its negative impact on society.
