Putin appreciates Turkey’s mediation efforts thanking Turkey's for being “useful and... trusted”
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Türkiye’s involvement in mediating the Ukraine conflict remains important. His remarks came during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China.
Putin expressed appreciation to Ankara for facilitating several direct negotiation rounds between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the three meetings held in Istanbul this year “produced progress in resolving several humanitarian issues,” and Türkiye’s role “will remain in demand in the future.”
In May, Ukraine agreed to rejoin direct negotiations with Moscow after previously halting the process in 2022. The decision reportedly followed encouragement from US President Donald Trump’s administration. Since then, the talks have led to prisoner exchanges and the return of fallen soldiers’ remains.
“We consider Türkiye a reliable, time-tested partner both in bilateral affairs and on the international arena,” Putin said.
The Russian leader also highlighted strong economic and energy ties, noting that Russia remains Türkiye’s leading supplier of natural gas and is overseeing the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, the country’s first. He added that millions of Russian tourists continue to travel to Türkiye each year.
On international cooperation, Putin described Russian-Turkish coordination as “well-tuned” and emphasized its “useful and... trusted” character.
