Workshop Discusses Challenges Of Third Sector

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) São Paulo – The fourth edition of the“Ideias” workshop, organized annually by Lar Sírio Pró-Infância, discussed on Friday (29) the challenges faced by the third sector, especially the importance of measuring and accounting for the impact of initiatives carried out by social assistance institutions. With the theme“Assessing Productive Inclusion in Practice: Connecting Youth, The Market, and Opportunities”, the event was held at the headquarters of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC ) in São Paulo.

Executive Manager of Instituto Cury, Luciana Kamimura gave a lecture on the size, challenges, and strategies of the third sector, which employs 4.7 million people and moves over BRL 200 billion (USD 37 billion) per year in Brazil. She also highlighted the importance of measuring and distinguishing between results and social impacts.

The audience at the event was made up of representatives from third-sector institutions

“Impact measures whether an initiative has led to an increase in income or a change in a person's quality of life,” she said.“Impact may not result in financial value but in value for society,” Kamimura added.

Measuring the impact of initiatives is a challenge that Lar Sírio Pró-Infância began to face through questions the institution itself raised to assess the effectiveness of its actions, said the organization's superintendent, Elaine Bueno, during the panel“Challenges, Practices, and Indicators in Preparing Youth for the Job Market.”

This panel was moderated by Ideal Social CEO Rachel Carneiro and featured the participation of Elaine Bueno; Alessandra Frisso, Executive Director of H2R Insights & Trends and member of the Board at the ABCC; Marcos Muniz, Government Relations Manager at Liga Solidária; Paulo Sergio Franzosi, Regional Manager of Sebrae Leste, which promotes the competitiveness of small businesses; and Rita Puosso, instructor of Professional Training courses at Senac SP.

“Lar Sírio is 102 years old, and when comparing this to the lifespan of social assistance organizations, talking about evaluation is very recent-a major challenge,” Bueno said. In 2019, the institution began measuring some indicators, an initiative that has evolved year by year.“Evaluation starts long before the results are delivered. It begins in the planning stage,” she added.

To quantify the institution's actions, Lar Sírio relies on a partnership with the company H2R. During the same panel, Alessandra Frisso recalled that the invitation to participate in Lar Sírio came from its former chairman and former ABCC President Salim Taufic Schahin, who passed away on August 21.

Dib opened the event at the Arab-Brazilian Chamber

She highlighted the importance of combining education and work in the training of young people as a means of promoting social equality.“And I mean equalizing the living conditions of the very rich with the very poor. Education is the main axis to achieving this. Work is the other,” she said.

The partnership with Lar Sírio is still in its early stages and will be implemented in phases. It plans to monitor the development of children and young people supported by Lar Sírio until their entry into the job market and translate this process into numbers. Frisso told ANBA that, based on metrics and statistical data, it will be possible to improve the methods and support offered to around 1,000 children and adolescents assisted by the institution in São Paulo.

The workshop was opened by the president of the ABCC, William Adib Dib Jr., who noted that the two institutions share a long history. Lar Sírio was founded 102 years ago by Arab immigrants, some of whom were ancestors of Dib himself and of Arab-origin entrepreneurs. Dib serves as legal director at Lar Sírio. The audience of around 90 people was made up mostly of members from social assistance institutions.
